NEWS: HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP DEVELOPS SMARTPHONE-BASED CAR KEY

The development of this new digital key will allow users to unlock their Hyundai vehicles at a tap of a screen…

REPLACING THE TRADITIONAL PHYSICAL KEY, HYUNDAI CAR OWNERS SIMPLY DOWNLOAD AN APP ALLOWING UP TO FOUR AUTHORISED PEOPLE TO HAVE ACCESS

This newest Hyundai development was announced on the 5th March 2019.

Due to Near Field Communication (NFC) technology which is present in almost all smartphones today, Hyundai have been able to utilise this function to detect the presence of an authorised person in close proximity to the car door.

The antenna that identifies the authorised person is found in the vehicle door handle. Once the driver is in the vehicle, the car can be started when the authorised phone is placed on the wireless charging pad and the start/stop button is pressed.

This latest development also allows for each authorised driver to have their preferred vehicle settings to stored. Therefore, the car can detect who is driving and automatically adjust the preferred settings:

  • Mirrors
  • Seats
  • Steering wheel
  • Audio
  • Video
  • Navigation
  • Head-up display

The possibilities that this smartphone-based key can offer is limitless. In future, Hyundai has plans to develop this app to cater to its widespread opportunities in car sharing. These could include:

  • Renting vehicles becomes a lot easier as the owner of the car doesn’t need to be physically at a location to deliver keys.
  • Future Car-sharing programs where enhanced features like an alarm can be triggered when the vehicle exceeds a speed or travels outside the programmed zone.

Ho Yoo, Group Leader of Hyundai Motor Group’s Electronics Development Group said, “ The Digital Key will benefit a very wide range of future Hyundai customers, as well as enabling innovative new schemes for vehicle sharing.”

“We are studying other ways to harness this type of connected-car technology to greatly enhance the driving and ownership experience.”
