7 Things To Do After A Car Accident

Being in a car accident can be scary, and I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone! You feel shaken, confused, and worried for both yourself and others involved. Emotions can run wild in situations like these, and you can feel unsure of what to do next. To take the pressure off and make things a little simpler, we have put together a list of seven things to do after a car accident.

  1. Check that everyone is ok.

No matter how much damage is caused to both vehicles, the most important thing is that everyone is unharmed and safe. If someone is injured in the accident call emergency services for help immediately (for police, fire brigade, or paramedics call 000).

  1. Put your hazard lights on.

Let other drivers know that an accident has occurred by turning on your hazard lights. If possible, move out of harms way by pulling the car over to the left-hand side of the road as much as possible. By removing yourself from oncoming traffic you will make the area safer.

  1. Contact Policelink if the scene is dangerous.

If the accident has caused major traffic disruption or significant damage to either vehicle/the roadways, or the other party refuses to exchange details, call Policelink on 131 444 for assistance at the scene.

  1. Exchange details.

Make sure to exchange details with anyone else involved in the accident. You will need their full name, residential address, phone number, drivers’ license number, and the make, model and registration details of their vehicle. These details will be used for insurance purposes.

  1. Take a picture of the car accident.

If you have a mobile phone handy, it is wise to take photos of the scene and any damage caused. These photos can help as evidence for insurance purposes.

  1. Collect witness details.

If any witnesses are at the scene, collect their details also. Your insurance company may want to contact them for information regarding the accident.

  1. Contact your insurance provider.

After completing 1 to 6, call your insurance company immediately to lodge a claim. Your insurer may be able to arrange towing of your vehicle if needed. The sooner you can get a hold of them, the sooner the claims can be processed.
