7 Car games to make any road trip fun!

Aussies love their road trips and it doesn’t matter the time of year, we are just happy to bundle everyone into the car and head off on holiday or to visit relatives. The problem is keeping the kids happy and content on a road trip, but car games are one option that can seriously help!

So for anyone who is considering another road trip with the kids, here are 7 games that will help to keep the kids occupied long enough to reach your destination while you are still sane.

License plate game

For this game, you will need a pen and paper because the aim is to write down the name of the 8 states and territories they see on plates of other vehicles. Points are scored for the first person to spot each plate and the overall winner is the person who clocks all 8 plates first.

Alphabet game

The aim of this game is to spot signs along the road that start with each letter of the alphabet - look for a sign that starts with ‘A’, then ‘B’ and so on. Each person can write down the letters they have spotted in order, but they also need to be spoken aloud, as this ramps up the competition and makes it more fun. The winner is the first person to spot the entire alphabet from A to Z.

Telephone game

In this game, one of you whispers a short story to their neighbour and then that story is whispered to the next person in the car and so on. Inevitably, the story will become mangled as it is retold, resulting in lots of laughter all around.

Picnic game

This can actually be on any topic, but it’s easier to start with ‘I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing…’. The first person starts with ‘A’, the next person adds something beginning with ‘B’, then ‘C’ and so on. For example, the first person might bring an Apple and the second person might bring a Banana: ‘I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing an Apple and a Banana’, and the next person restates the sentence but adds something beginning with ‘C’. If someone can’t remember all of the items in the list then they are out of the game and the winner is the person who remembers the entire list.

20 questions

This is another easy game that can keep everyone quiet for longer than 5mins! One person thinks of a place, person, animal or item and the others have to ask questions in turn that only require a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer, until someone makes the correct guess.

Animal name game

The first person names an animal and the next person has to name an animal that starts with the last letter of this animal, then the third person has to name an animal that begins with the last letter of the second person’s animal and so on. The winner is the last person still in the game who can think of an animal’s name beginning with the appropriate letter. You can also use the names of cars, trees, rivers, beaches, towns and lots more, depending on the age of your children.

I-spy

This age old game still has legs and can keep kids quiet for ages! All you need to do is to find something in your field of view and say, ‘I spy with my little eye, something beginning with D’, you can also use colours instead of letters for younger children. The winner is the person who guesses the what the other person has spied using their one clue.
